these are two maps of the same place drawn by seperate people, competing
over which one was the superior of the two.
the town was amboy, IL, located about two hours west of chicago. after
an on-the-job visit to amboy high school, i asked the
students if there was anything i should see before leaving town and probably
not returning again for a year. as noted on the
maps, the highlights according to the townspeople were the train depot
museum (which turned out to be closed), and a park full
of wooden statues "depicting life in and around the city of amboy"
that were created by a bunch of locals using chainsaws after a
tornado reduced the trees into bare trunks. also of note was a pharmacy
with an old-fashioned soda fountain, which ended up being
the only place i actually stopped (it was too miserable and cold to think
about wandering around a park filled with woodcarvings.)
the map on the left was drawn by one of the (male) art students, and was
clear enough for me.
the map on the right was created in an admonishing response from a pretty
blonde girl who was likely to have been voted, "miss perfect"
in
the high school newspaper. she didnt think his map was sufficient and
gave me this version which was to be much better and clearer.
this was met with grumbling dismay by mapmaker number one, who argued
that his map was "just fine."
